Turbocharging a Yamaha RD350: Good Idea or Bad? Expert Guide

Turbocharging a Yamaha RD350 is technically possible but rarely practical. Because two-stroke engines use the crankcase as the induction pump, boost disrupts scavenging, Autolube oil delivery, and the tuned expansion chamber's resonance — problems four-stroke turbos never face. Reed-valve RD350LC/RZ350 models are far better candidates than piston-port originals. Real precedents exist in turbo Banshee drag builds and turbo two-stroke snowmobiles, both requiring forged internals, reinforced cranks, and EFI — not bolt-on kits. Verdict: a bad idea for street use, a legitimate project only for experienced builders with dyno access.
